Ray was born in LaPasse, Ontario, the son of John A. Lacroix and Florence M. Lacroix. In his youth, he had many adventures along the Ottawa River and they continued through into his retirement. He loved fishing in the marsh and took many friends and family for picnics on the island. Though he moved more than 35 times in his life and lived in many towns and cities, he considered LaPasse his home.
As a boy he had limited educational opportunities so he became a carpenter, like his father. Then to pursue his education he took many correspondence and night courses in construction, management, engineering and economics and eventually earned a university level degree in Cost Engineering. He worked for several construction firms in Northern Ontario, Labrador and Ottawa, quickly rising in the ranks, and was the President of his own company, Gil Bern Charles Corporation from 1978 until his retirement when he dissolved the company.
Ray was a community builder. He managed the construction of thousands of homes in the Ottawa area and several in Renfrew County, ranging from housing co-ops, townhouses, apartments, and seniors' residences to single family homes. He also built schools, warehouses and government and commercial buildings. He was also a community builder in the sense that he volunteered to make the community he lived in a better place. He was a long time member and former President of the Eastview-Russell Kiwanis Club, a Knight of Columbus 4th degree, former member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church Committee, a former volunteer at the Pembroke Food Bank, etc. He especially loved volunteering for projects where he could get the community to work together such as lobster fests, barbecues and church suppers.
He will be sadly missed by his wife of 65 years Germaine Sabourin, his children Pauline (Paul Johns), Gilbert, Bernard, Christine (Marc Langlois) and Charles, his grandchildren Vicki (Luc), Ross (Kelsey), Michelle (Mike), Emily and William and his great-grandchildren Xavier, Mackenzie, Raymond, and Stella Rose. He also leaves his sisters Sister Constance Lacroix CSJ, Lillian, and Susan, his great-aunt Doris Hall, sisters-in-law Rita Bernatchez and Helen Sabourin as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and his sister Mabel Adam.
Funeral Mass and Intermentl has taken place in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish, LaPasse on Monday June 22. In memory of Ray, donations to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, LaPasse would be appreciated. The family would like to thank all the medical personnel, staff and management of the Maplewood Retirement Residence and the caregivers from Bayshore Home Health for the outstanding care he received since he was discharged from hospital in March.
