Patrick Joseph Irving was born September 14, 1931 to Mary Conway and William Irving on a farm in Alice Township outside of Pembroke, Ontario. Dad was the youngest of 10 children in an Irish Catholic family of five girls and five boys. Being the baby of the family, it was often reported by the five sisters that Dad was terribly spoiled by Mother. After labouring on the farm until he was 14 and walking many miles to school, Dad moved to town and became a bell hop at the grand Pembroke Hotel in downtown Pembroke. Shortly after, he began working at Canada Veneers where he spent the next forty years of his successful working career until he retired in 1994.
Soon after his employment at Canada Veneers, Dad met a pretty Newfoundlander from Joe Batt’s Arm, Fogo Island called Ann Vickers. They married October 10, 1955 at Holy Name Church in Pembroke and over the next seven years, their family grew with the addition of Jack, Janice, Karen and Joanne. Dad always enjoyed socializing with family and friends, BBQs, some spirits now and then, playing cards, and renting a cottage across the river in the summer. Dad loved, doted on, and overindulged his 7 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. He loved having the gang around on special occasions and in later years, took charge of cooking a delicious turkey at Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner. It was important to him to keep in close contact with his siblings. Dad always looked forward to attending the Conway Reunions and celebrating his Irish Catholic heritage.
Dad had a wry sense of humour. He always enjoyed teasing family members and getting a reaction from people. He was an intellectual man with a curious mind. He always kept abreast of the political world and was a strong admirer and supporter of Pierre Trudeau. Dad was a logical thinker with a methodical approach to solving problems. He loved challenging himself with brain teasers and regularly mastered complex crossword puzzles. An expert carpenter, Dad made many beautiful pieces of furniture for all of us that showed close attention to detail.
Dad was a longtime devoted member and volunteer at his church, Our Lady of Lourdes.
The family wishes to thank the staff at the Pembroke Regional Hospital for their compassionate and expert care and attention they provided to our father. We also thank family and friends for their thoughtfulness and support.
